An Caladh

Portmagee

The busy marina in Portmagee is picturesque even in winter.

Portmagee, An Caladh, meaning 'the harbour' is a picturesque village located on the western coast of the peninsula. The colourful buildings house pubs, restaurants, cafés and gift shops, giving Portmagee a unique character.

Look for birds and seals from the parks in Portmagee.

The name Portmagee comes from Captain Theobald Magee, a notorious 18th-century smuggler. His tale, along with that of the local ‘seine boats’ is told through the interpretation panels that are seen throughout the village’s small parks. These charming parks are lovely places to take some time to watch the birds that feed in the Portmagee Channel, an important ‘Special Area of Conservation’.

The Kerry Cliffs, just a few kilometres outside the village are an amazing spot to see more of Iveragh’s spectacular coastal geology, bird life and islands. Not only does this bring you into view of four different protected areas, from the Portmagee Channel to the Skellig Islands, but the cliffs themselves are a fantastic representation of Iveragh’s geological history where various layers of rock are clearly visible in the cliff face. On the Cahersiveen side of the village you can find the Pound and Knockeenawaddra Loop Walks that traipse along peaceful rural roadways, picturesque farmland and wide-open blanket bog.

Portmagee has retained a strong connection to Skellig Michael, and currently most of the boats that do landing trips to the UNESCO World Heritage Site leave from Portmagee Harbour. These trips also incorporate a ‘drive by’ of the other rock, Skellig Beag, which hosts the largest breeding gannet colony in Ireland.
