Doire Fhíonáin
Derrynane
Derrynane, (Doire Fhíonáin, meaning 'oak-wood of Fíonán'), in the southwest of the peninsula, is renowned for its spectacular coastal environment and the historic Derrynane House and Gardens. The immaculately kept house and gardens were once home to Daniel O’Connell and are certainly worth visiting for their history and beauty. Tours and refreshments are available. Walkways weave through the grounds and neighbouring woodland, so exploring the outside can be a whole day affair. Look for a recently excavated ring fort, whimsical summer house, and an enchanting fairy trail.
Back at the coast, Derrynane’s sandy beaches, rockpools, coastal lagoon and dunes are an ideal location to discover all kinds of plants and animals over a gentle stroll. With the woodlands that border the house and gardens, visitors have a wide selection of routes to explore. The Derrynane Mass Loop is a 7km looped walk which takes in Derrynane and its surrounds, offering visitors a chance to step back in time to follow a path long taken by locals.
The wetlands and estuary behind the dunes are great places for birdwatching, especially in autumn and winter. The mass path is home to some interesting Lusitanian flora, and the woodlands are not just beautiful, but are a fantastic place to experience the dawn chorus in spring.
The turquoise waters in the sheltered coves are very popular for all kinds of water sports, from swimming and diving to kayaking and paddleboarding. Late night stargazing in Derrynane’s unspoilt skies is yet another attraction to add to a long list, especially if you visit in the winter.
